APPUI: Caregivers Program

APPUI: Caregivers Program

Vision has a number of resources and programs to benefit caregivers. We recognize that many adults, often seniors, have loved ones who need care and support on a regular basis and that it may be difficult to take care of yourself in the midst of taking care of someone else.

Here, you will find useful information about what is available to you locally and provincially and our upcoming events that may help you cope.

“Self-Care for Caregivers” is a series of informational sessions/workshops for caregivers that are led by psychologist Megan McCallum. For more information on these sessions, contact Shanna Rehel at s.rehel@vgpn.ca or call 418-360-3653.

The themes of this series of workshops include:

  • How to be a Caregiver AND Care for Yourself
  • Think about Thinking = Let’s Get in Your Head!
  • Emotions: What They are Trying to Tell You and What to do About it
  • Mind-body Interactions: Healthy Body, Happy Mind
  • The Power of Connecting: Communication Tips
  • Ambigous Loss: Caring for Someone who is Physically Present, but Absent or Changed Psychologically

In the MRC du Rocher-Percé, the Second Souffle Program hosts regular activities in French for caregivers.

Please keep an eye out for all upcoming caregiver activities! Please check our Facebook Page, for updates on when each program is available.

Resources from Biblio-Aidant:

You are a caregiver if, in one way or another, you provide support to someone close to you. Looking for resources? Biblio-Aidants offers lists of resources, including organizations, online information, useful books for adults and children, and suggestions for films, television shows, and documentaries. These resources are organized into booklets on the following topics.

The Direct Allowance Program is a specific program for people who live at home and need help to manage basic tasks. This program allows you to choose who is hired to provide the help you need.

The conditions surrounding eligibility are as follows:

  • The person requiring assistance lives at home and has a stable state of health
  • The person needs long-term services – help with tasks like taking a bath, eating, dressing, taking care of your home, etc.
  • The person is able to manage their service needs
  • The person is or has been assessed by a member of the CSSS

The program is intended to relieve unpaid caregivers, at least in part, and so close family members who live with you are not recommended. If no one is available to provide the needed assistance, the CSSS can temporarily assign someone to the position. A case worker can help you assess whether or not you are eligible for the program and, if you are, explain the process and answer any questions you may have.
